Texting driver killed in crash on way home from speeding course
A driver who was texting at the wheel, has died in a collision with a lorry after leaving a speed awareness course.
He was filmed on the lorry's dash cam veering into the path of oncoming traffic while he was sending a text, an inquest into his death heard.
The 29-year-old, who died instantly in the collision, which occurred near Bridlington, East Yorkshire in November last year, had just left a speed awareness course following a 12-hour shift at the food firm where he worked.
His mother said: "No mother should have to go through what I have and the devastation of losing a son. he was such a bright man and very popular with a lot of people. He will be forever with me in my heart,"
"We are devastated by what has happened. It has blown our world apart.
"If someone somewhere reads this and it makes them stop using their phone while they are driving, then at least that is something."
The inquest was told that he sent a text message at 1.04pm – the same time his car crashed into the HGV.
The driver of the lorry told police that he had attempted to swerve, but could not avoid a collision.
Coroner Paul Marks recorded a verdict of accidental death and took the opportunity to warn drivers of texting while behind the wheel.
"All vehicle drivers should use hands-free communication accessories. Motorists should not read or compose texts. They need to pull up if they want to send a text," he said.
